Social Style Dances

Foxtrot
Big Band slow or up-tempo music; can have a jazzy sound as well. Often heard at weddings, cruises, formal, or swing events. Typical foxtrot artists include Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Duke Ellington,...
Waltz
Slow music with a 1-2-3 timing. Popular at weddings and formal events. Typical songs include "Fascination" and "Moon River."

American Social Tango
Easy to learn and adapt to social dance floor. Most commonly heard and danced at ballroom events. Al Pacino performed a very nice version of this dance in the movie, "The Scent of a Woman."
Argentine Tango
The authentic form of Tango; this is the national dance of Argentina. Can be danced at a Tango Bar or at an Iacono Ballroom Center dance event. The dance is more creative and interpretive than the simpler American Tango, but can be taught to beginners.

Swing
Various names and styles of swing include Jitterbug, Lindy, Lindy Hop, and Jive. This dance style covers a range of music from the early Big Band sound of artists such as Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman, through the Rock and Roll era up to present day bands such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Brian Setzer, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Music can also be slow to very fast. This is a fun dance played at Swing Clubs, weddings, cruises, ballroom functions, school dances and many other social events.
Latin
The rhythmic music and dances of the Caribbean and Latin America. Dances include Rumba, Cha Cha, Merengue, Mambo, Salsa, Bolero, and Samba. Latin is experiencing a resurgence of popularity with artists such as Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, and Marc Anthony. Also, many popular artists including Sam Cooke, The Drifters, The Beatles, Elton John, Kenny G, and many more have incorporated Latin rhythms into their music. These dances are fun to learn, and can be used at Latin clubs, weddings, ballroom dances, cruises, school dances, and many other social events.

Hustle

Also known as disco, this music and dance form is experiencing a resurgence of popularity and is often now referred to as "Retro." This is a popular dance often used at weddings, ballroom and social events, school dances, and cruises.

International Style

This highly stylized and technical form of ballroom dancing is most often danced in competition. The International Standard includes Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. International Latin includes Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive. This is the style that will be used in the ballroom division of the Olympics. It is also the style currently taught to university dance teams across the United States.
